Great catching-up race on the Nurburgring

Changing weather conditions in Germany

For the second time this season, the Audi Sport TT Cup took place on the Nurburgring last weekend (September 8th-10th). Young driver Yannik Brandt started with high expectations. After a difficult qualifying, the German-Swiss showed two strong races.

One week after his guest performance at the Histo Cup, Yannik Brandt sat behind the wheel of his 310 HP strong Audi Sport TT again. This time, the 16-year-old race driver traveled to the Eifel again. For the second time this season the brand cup took place on the traditional Nurburgring – this time within the framework of the German Touring Car Masters (DTM).

The drivers started on the short configuration of the traditional track in the Eifel. Yannik was excited about his start: “I’m really looking forward to starting here. I already know this version from Formula 4 and especially like the technically challenging Mercedes-Arena.”

The weather caused changing conditions. It rained during the free trainings, qualifying and the first race. “Until now we’ve rarely driven on wet tracks. I’m now going to have to gather experience during the free training”, said Yannik before the start. The trainings didn’t go perfectly though, in the end he only achieved starting positions eleven and ten for the two ranked races.

The Audi-protégé achieved a successful start into the first race then. From eleventh starting position, Yannik fought his way forward and finished on the great sixth place. “That was a good race. I had a lot of great duels and drove fast times on the challenging track.”

The youngster continued his great trend during the second race of the brand cup on Sunday. Yannik raced to the front field again, but was stopped during the fight for fifth place. A rough triple-header and a later collision stopped his catching-up race involuntarily. He only came in seventh. “Unfortunately my opponent wanted to take advantage of a gap that wasn’t really there. Apart from that I made the best out of the bad qualifying though”, Yannik summed up.

The Audi Sport TT Cup is already going to continue in two weeks (September 22nd – 24th). Then, the racing series of the German automobile manufacturer is going to take place on the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg – Yannik’s favorite track.
